does anyone have opinions on where some really good indian food can be found? ive been having a craving and would love some suggestions on getting it fulfilled. cambridge / somerville area is best as thats where we live, but id check out anything.
so far, ive been to the "indian bistro" (cant rememver the full name) on the main drag in JP, and it was quite good. not totally amazing however, and a little far to repeat frequently.

Re: best indian?
Wed, September 6, 2006 - 10:26 AMThe advantage of Boston/Cambridge/Somerville is that there is such a substantial number of Indians and Indian-Americans living in the area is that the quantity and overall quality is quite high.
I used to live in JP and Bukkhara was one I liked a great deal-- but it has been years since I was on that end of town.
One of my favorites is Rangoli in Allston, they serve mostly Southern Indian food, so many of the dishes are unique to this metropolitan area. They are also one of two places where I think the chaat is something special (the other is Punjabi Dahba in Inman Square.)
In Cambridge, I am fond of Royal Bengal, which serves Bengali cuisine. THey serve a number of fish dishes, which is atypical of the more popular Northern/Pan-Indian cuisine served at most places.
I also like Shalimar in Central Square a great deal. -

Mon, November 20, 2006 - 7:59 PMone of my favorite indian places is Namaskar in davis sq. it's not a very well-known place, but they make very tender tandoori meats, and the chicken tikka masala is awesome. and the samosas....mmm.....to give it a shot without investing too much, they have a lunch buffet that's about $9 (i believe it's 7 days a week). it's a good way to try a bunch of their food. the staff is always pleasant and helpful. and generally, there's hardly ever a wait for a table. -

Tue, November 21, 2006 - 5:22 AMSince I posted, I've made it to Namaskar and liked it as well. Looking forward to going back and trying more dishes.
And I've been to Punjabi Dhaba twice, and really *wanted* to like it, but I really wasn't too impressed. -

Thu, November 23, 2006 - 11:07 AMPunjabi Dhaba is cheap and often fast, but it is only where I go it is late at night and take-out seems the best option for dinner. As I said, I can recommend the chaat very highly, but for a sit down Indian meal, there are many better dining rooms and kitchens. -

Mon, January 8, 2007 - 3:00 PMandy, i'm with you on punjabi dhaba. i have a bunch of friends that SWEAR by it. i try to like it, but am not too impressed myself. i know it's kinda like indian fast food, but honestly, it's not THAT much cheaper than going to one of the sit-down places. i live closer to namaskar, so i'd rather get my take-out from there. -

Re: best indian?
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 9:37 AMI hit the lunch buffet at Namaskar this weekend and while a couple of bucks more than most buffets it was well worth it. Even the familar dishes were spiced in a unique house style, and there were a couple of things we don't usually find on buffet including a bread that I had been prviously unfamiliar-- it was like a small roti that had vegetables baked into the dough. They also have gulab jamun for the buffet dessert instead of the kheer that is more typical in this area.
