Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Tue, July 6, 2004 - 7:46 PMAs a general rule, I stick to the rule of "if you are going to spend $2 or more for a cup of coffee, make it an espresso based drink." Part of the reason for this is that it has to be made fresh while what we generally think of as "regular coffee" may very well be sitting there for a while.
Since much of my recreation is centered upon Central and Inman Squares in Cambridge I generally take my espresso from either one of the two 1369 Coffeeshops or Toscanini's-- the latter is an icecream shop but the espresso is wonderful there.

Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Wed, July 7, 2004 - 6:36 AMPersonally I am a fan of Starbucks (I know the evil empire). Their regular coffee ain't great, but their espresso drinks are wondermus. I love that there is a Starbucks inside the barnes and noble in the prudential center. Grab a stack of books, get a nice frothy something and a huge sugary pastry - and sit for a few.
Dunkin Donuts coffee is just undrinkable and isn't fit for human consumtion IMHO.
I really like Peets coffee. They have the best non-fru-fru coffee around. Their customer service is to be commended. The only one I know of is downtown.
Believe it or not I had a delicious cup of coffee at Krispy Kreme. Just black coffee made perfectly (why is this so rare?). And you can't beat the donuts - they are a religious experience when hot.
Cambridge seems to be the spot for the smaller artsy-er coffee shops. In Boston you cannot beat the Trident bookstore cafe on Newbury street.
It ain't coffee, but I am a big fan of TeaLuxe on Newberry street. Perticularly with the warmer weather, sipping ice tea out of the sidewalk and checking out the beautiful people walking by is a great way to relax. -

Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Thu, July 8, 2004 - 8:37 AMJDM- I used to love Dunkin Donuts but lately it seems so watered down. I like Peets in Harvard Square but there is not a lot of seating and at times it has the atmosphere of a library. I too love the Trident Bookstore/cafe.
I do like Diesel in Davis Square but if you dont get there early it can get packed. I like the atmosphere with the hip music, couches and pool tables but it can be quite noisy, but I dont mind that.
Esspresso Royal Cafe is pretty good on Newberry street with its indoor and outdoor seating. Also, the one by Northeastern University is good- very large and you can pull out a laptop and sit there all day without feeling like you are taking up space- I basically lived there during law school.
I havent had a great deal of luck finding cool coffee shops in Cambridge- isnt that where Cafe Algiers is? I keep meaning to check that out. Its nice to sit out in the open at Au Bon Pain right next to the T. There is a decent Peets and a good Dunkin Donuts on Mass Ave I believe. -

Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Thu, July 8, 2004 - 10:32 AMWhen I am in Davis Square, I am more likely to have my coffee at Someday Café than at Diesel-- it better appeals to the bohemian in me.
Algiers in Harvard Square is good, but as a general rule, I haven't really gone there much. The prices on their menu are a little steep, and at least up until recently, they still allowed smoking which makes it uncomfortable for me.
Any of the pastry shops on Hanover Street in the North End serve good espresso. -

I really need to check that out. I didnt think legally they could still allow smoking. Interesting. -

Wed, December 13, 2006 - 8:54 AMNatick has Clever Monk. 57 Eliot St. They have a great selection and nice organic crunchy stuff as well. It's on Rt 16 and very convenient.
Red Barn Coffee Roasters is pretty cool too. They're all over if you ever make it out of Cambridge alive!

Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 7:30 AMThe Someday is now defunct. The owner forgot to renew his lease. I'm trying to remember when I last drank coffee in Davis Square though. I sometimes join with some friends who like to meet up at the Au Bon Pain in Davis, but I stick to the baked goods, as the coffee does not impress me beyond "better than Dunkin' Donuts but not as good as Starbucks."

Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Tue, November 21, 2006 - 5:28 AMI recently discovered True Grounds in Ball Square, Somerville, right near Sound Bites. Really enjopyed this spot, a pretty low key atmosphere with a nice mix of friends talking and people studying or working on laptops. Coffee is all from the awesome Terrior Coffee Co, and made really well, and they also have a pretty great menu of sandwiches and such. I think they're fairly new, and worth checking out if you're in the area. -

Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Mon, January 8, 2007 - 3:39 PMim still a fan of true grounds, and another spot ive been to and liked is cafe soliel in teele square on broadway. great coffee from rao's in western mass and a nice menu of sandwiches. ive been avoiding diesel, the drinks are great but i find the food mediocre and everything overpriced. its a nice spot to study or people-watch, but true ground and cafe soliel offer a mellower atmosphere, better food, and fairer prices.

Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Tue, November 28, 2006 - 12:07 PMOur current favorite is Mariposa cafe on Mass Ave (central sq cambridge). Very good espresso drinks made quickly and not too hot and delicious scones. Toscanini's does have good coffee and we love their ice cream, but they don't have much for baked goods and usually are pretty slow at getting the coffee out in the morning. We used to go to Carberry's because we lived closer to it and love their icelandic pastries, but they are slow and consistently burn the milk making it undrinkable. -

Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Mon, January 8, 2007 - 3:05 PMmy two favorite coffee shops are True Grounds in Ball Sq and Diesel Cafe in Davis Sq. good coffee and good vibe.
i also like the Danish Pastry House on Boston Ave in Medford...this is more of a bakery than coffee shop, but their dark roast and house blend coffees are pretty good...i haven't tried any of their espresso drinks. it's a nice, airy european-style cafe.

Re: Best Coffee Shops/Cafes
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 1:21 PMSimon's in Cambridge, b.w Harvard and Porter Squares. The only barista-technique spot in Greater Boston. Add.: Judson, part of the barismo.com crew, might be managing the Hi-Rise Brattle St.'s espresso program sometime soon, but not sure if this is tentative. Atomic Cafe, Marblehead (skip the Beverly loc.), especially if Andrew (co-owner) is on the machine. Northampton Coffee, Northamption. And then you go to Manhattan (Grumpie's, Gimme!, 9th St., Abrasca~?).
Check barismo.com for local cupping events, etc., and updates on that crew's coming-soon roaster-retailer location in Arlington. They held a sweet cupping event Feb. 3.
But really--Simon's. My roomie and I travel there ~5 days/wk. from JP, for the same reason we do the same to Clear Flour Bread in Allston. They're the only game in town.
Cheers.
